Caroline Forbes comment ficathon

« previous entry | next entry »
Oct. 11th, 2011 | 02:44 pm

HOW THIS WORKS:
(borrowed from softly_me with some alterations)

1. Prompts can be for anything pertaining to Caroline Forbes from The Vampire Diaries. Gen fics, shippy fics, so long as it relates to Caroline Forbes.

2. Prompt in the comments. Format is thus: Character(s) or Pairing, prompt. (Or, you know, just do what everyone else is doing).

3. When writing fic, put in your comment title: TITLE OF FIC (pairing, rating). Only include the rating if it is R or NC17. Using a title is important because it is the only way people will know that your comment has fic and will therefore get you more comments. Everyone wins.

4. If you read a fic and like it, leave feedback for the author. It's just a nice thing to do.

5. BEWARE OF SPOILERS. Prompts and fics can contain spoilers from any aired episode as well as the promo following the most recent episode. Please do not use spoilers from upcoming episodes.

6. Feel free to promote this with the following code:

7. GO FORTH AND PROMPT!

Liar

She's never been a good liar. She's always had her tells. Her eyebrow would raise, her nose would flare. Her voice would even waver from time to time, giving away each moment of dishonesty. Of course, she's never had to lie about something important. Any time she's had to lie before, it was something she didn't want to do.

Until now.

Until now when she was facing her former best friend and an Original vampire, the Original vampire. He was the one who tried to kill her at the end of the previous school year. He was the one who tried to kill Tyler, who did kill Elena and Jenna.

And she had to lie to him. It was obvious that Stefan wasn't doing a good job at this, at keeping Klaus away from Elena. Maybe he'd even brought Klaus here on purpose. He'd once told Caroline that it was important to hold onto the things that kept her human: Matt, her mother, her friendships with Elena and Bonnie. Stefan didn't look like the same person who'd issued that statement when she first turned. Maybe he wanted to cut the ties to his humanity, or at least the big one. Maybe he brought Klaus here on purpose, just to cut the final tie that was holding him back.

No, she thought. Stefan would never do that. Not the Stefan she knew.

"You were supposed to be my vampire," Klaus whispered, stepping closer to her.

She shook her head.

"Maybe that's why it won't work. Maybe the vampire I used wasn't good enough."

Caroline took a deep breath. "Or maybe you did it wrong," she suggested. It was hard. It was so hard to keep her voice bitchy when all she wanted to do was run away. Run to Elena and have her best friend comfort her. But she couldn't do this.

She had to protect Elena.

"I did everything properly. I killed the doppelganger," Klaus spoke. It sounded as though he was merely speaking his thoughts to the air around him.

Caroline looked at Stefan, accusing him with her eyes. This was somehow his fault. She had to make it right. "Then why are you here?"

"Because Stefan is lying about something," Klaus replied. "I have to know what." Klaus studied the blonde, scrutinizing her face for clues. "You know what it is, don't you?"

Caroline shook her head. "No. I don't know what he's lying about."

She spoke too quickly. Another tell.

Klaus closed the space between them. He placed a hand upon her face, forcing her to look into his eyes. "Tell me what you know."

She couldn't blink. If she blinked, he'd know.

"Elena is dead. She had the necklace once upon a time. Its been lost for months."

Her voice was a monotone.

"The necklace? My sister's necklace?"

"Yes. She lost it while she was swimming at the lake house."

Klaus nodded. He had his answers. He and Stefan left. Stefan didn't look over at Caroline, didn't thank her with his eyes. Once they left, Caroline fell to the floor.

She couldn't believe she'd done it. She'd lied to Klaus, an Original.

She had to tell Elena.

Look, she isn't supposed to be the hero of this story. She's supposed to be the supporting player, the one who makes sure no one gets killed while Damon and Elena do the heavy lifting; she isn't supposed to have to face the monster wearing her best friend's face.

Elena doesn't get it; Caroline isn't sure if it's because Damon didn't explain it or didn't explain it right but Elena doesn't understand how not killing people takes actual work. Killing is what's natural; not killing is the unnatural state of being.

Stefan taught her that.

But now she's standing in a darkened hallway with a blood-smeared mouth Stefan standing in front of her, and Caroline knows this is it; either she says something which lets her glimpse the Stefan she loves or she lets him go with the creature who ruins everything.

"No matter how good it feels to give yourself over to it, you fight it," she blurts out, remembering the words he said to her months earlier when her own face was coated with blood, when her world was imploding. Caroline sees the recognition register on his face so she rushes on, "You can survive this. I'll help you. You can get through this."

Stefan starts to shake his head, and Caroline takes a tentative step forward; when he doesn't move, she rushes forward, flinging her arms around him, holding him as tightly as he held her once. He tries to struggle away but Caroline locks her arms around him as if she is going to anchor him to the earth. She once kicked Damon's ass because she was angrier, and she doesn't care how much human blood Stefan has in him right now; she is more desperate and she'll do whatever it takes to keep him here.

"Care," he breathes shakily, and Caroline starts crying because...Well, because that's what she does when the only person in the world who really gets her says her name like it's a prayer and a plea and a thousand other things she is just too young to fully understand.

She manuevers him into the girls' bathroom, wets paper towels and wipes at his mouth because he still doesn't look like Stefan; he is crying now too, and it's almost worse than seeing him bloody because he just looks so damn pitiful and he's supposed to be Stefan Salvatore, the guy who always keeps it together, the guy who pulls her back from the edge. He is her Lexi, and right now he needs Lexi, and Caroline doesn't know how to be Lexi because she's still only seventeen and vampirism didn't give her wisdom; it gave her a gnawing hunger in her gut that makes her want to lick the blood on Stefan's skin and emotions so overpowering, she doesn't even feel like herself most days.

Caroline tosses the paper towels into the wastebasket and then stifles a gasp as Stefan sags against her, pressing his forehead to hers; she stills as he twists his hands into her shirt, silently sobbing.

"It's going to be okay," she assures him, trying to instill confidence in her words, trying to make sure it doesn't seem like a lie. "I'm right here, and I'm not going anywhere. I won't let anything happen to you."

When Damon and Bonnie find them, she is cleaning against the wall, Stefan's head in her lap, his legs pulled into the fetal position, and she cards her fingers through his hair, alternately shushing him and murmuring affirmations. Damon meets her gaze steadily, and Caroline feels something pass between them, an understanding like they've never had before, and then she nods without really knowing what it means.

She is not Lexi, but she has just pulled Stefan back from the edge, and she's in charge now. Not Damon, not Elena, not Bonnie; she is the one who is going to save Stefan, and, though she isn't sure she is qualified for the job, Caroline knows she wants it.

Just The Blood

The music pulsed, bringing every heartbeat in the room into sync. Paul was finally loosening up and Caroline thought, at this pace he just might enjoy himself before the night was done. She slid one hand down his arm before bringing his hand to rest on her undulating hip. He gulped and she almost laughed. He was far more innocent than her usual, which was what she liked about him.

She rocked her hips teasingly against his and felt him stiffen. He bit his lip and their foreheads touched.

“You’re mean,” he said and only her vampire senses allowed her to hear it over the music surrounding them.

She pulled him closer and said, “I know,” into his ear before kissing down his neck. Tucked into the circle of his arms, cradled against his chest, she could almost feel human.

A hand wrapped around her wrist, pulling her viciously from Paul. Dark eyes, black to the edges, met hers and she didn’t even think to protest as Stefan pulled her through the thick crowd of dancers.

“Hey!” Paul yelled, chasing after.

Stefan rounded on him and Paul had to rise up on his tip toes to avoid slamming into him. “Stay,” Stefan growled.

Caroline turned quickly and had just enough time to undo the compulsion before the crowd closed up between them. It had been hard enough to get him to agree to come to a club, she didn’t want the trauma of being frozen in the middle of the dance floor working against her in the future.

Stefan dragged her through the crowd, heedless of the people giving them curious looks. To any of them it probably looked like he was a jealous boyfriend. Or an abusive one, she thought, catching sight of Damon at the bar. He waved cheekily and she sneered in response. Was it too much to ask that she only run into one Salvatore at a time? Couldn't they just leave her alone for a decade or two?

Stefan threw her into one of the dark alcoves meant for lovers. He stood in the opening, arms crossed, serious face in place, light from the club streaming over his shoulders.

“What!” she snapped.

“You were going to kill him!”

Caroline rolled her eyes. “I was kissing him!”

“On the neck?” Stefan asked, incredulous.

“Yes! I’m very good at it, just ask your brother.”

The light didn’t allow her to see but she was certain he paled. As much as she hated bringing up her short lived relationship with Damon, knowing it bothered Stefan was enough reason to brave it.

“I like Paul,” she said before Stefan could stop gaping. “I’m not going to hurt him.”

“You don’t know that, Caroline. You can’t know.” He ran a frustrated hand through his hair. “You’re not a little kid anymore. He’ll be shaving and cut himself and what will happen then? You need blood to survive -- you can’t fight that kind of hunger, not forever.”

“It’s not just the blood!” she yelled, immediately thankful for the loud music, drowning out her words beyond the alcove. She charged on. “You are such an idiot! You keep going back to high school -- I mean, really, who wants to go back to high school? You work so hard at being close to people without actually going near them. Don't you ever wonder why?”

He stared blankly at her. She sighed. She enjoyed bothering Stefan but hurting him was never fun.

“Why do you think Katherine keeps following you around? Or Damon always threatened to kill you but never did? Or Klaus dragged you with him on his crazy murder road trip? People need people, Stefan. Sometimes more than anything else." She kissed him on the cheek as she slipped past him, eager to get back to Paul.
